The International Import Expo in China: A New Initiative for Further Integration with the Global Economy

The China International Import Expo (CIIE) is a new initiative hosted by the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government. It has been held annually since 2018 in the fall season. The Chinese government’s objective in organizing this exhibition is to support free trade, promote the global economy, and open China’s market to the world. International organizations such as the World Trade Organization, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization are participants in this event

This exhibition is divided into two sections: the national pavilions and corporate booths, featuring various categories such as electronic equipment, services, smart devices, food and agricultural products, healthcare products, and more. It covers an area of 360,000 square meters. In its second edition held in 2019, the exhibition hosted over 126 official foreign delegations and more than 3,800 companies from 181 countries. The total transaction volume during the event was announced to be $71.13 billion, showing a 23% increase compared to the previous year. Approximately 500,000 official registrants participated in the second edition, and by the end of the exhibition, it attracted more than 900,000 visitors

The selection of Shanghai as the venue for this exhibition is based on its status as China’s commercial hub, the vibrant presence of multinational corporations’ headquarters and regional offices in the city, the extensive air connections between Shanghai and 282 cities worldwide, and the city’s central role in the Chinese government’s development plans for the Yangtze River Delta region. The Islamic Republic of Iran has had significant participation in the exhibition, especially in the corporate booth section, in the past editions. In the second edition held in 2019, Iran made a notable impact with the honorable presence of the Minister of Industry, Mine, and Trade in the national section. The presence of Iranian companies and the showcasing of the country’s capabilities in the national pavilion at CIIE can have significant effects in demonstrating Iran’s potential to the Chinese domestic market and other countries
